Madison, Wis. (Aug. 22, 2016) — After riding an electric bike for 34 days and 816 hours through 12 different states, University of Chicago Ph.D. scholar and south India native Ravi Kempaiah has set the new world record for miles ridden on an e-bike. Ravi pedaled more than 5,000 miles to break the current record of 4,443.4 miles for the longest journey on a motorized bike. Ravi departed from Len Mattioli’s electric bike store, Crazy Lenny’s E-Bikes, in Madison, Wisconsin, on July 18 and finished his ride at Stromer HQ in San Diego on Saturday, Aug. 20. During the course of his trip, Ravi rode more than 150 miles a day on a Stromer ST2-S e-bike with an average speed of 22.5 mph across the Midwest and Pacific Northwest.
“In the beginning, this adventure seemed like an impossible feat, but after completing this, I can’t imagine my life without this experience,” Kempaiah said. “The places I visited, people I met and memories I made will stay with me for the rest of my life.”
The success of Ravi’s world record ride stems from his passion for electric bikes and his three-year friendship with Len Mattioli, owner of Crazy Lenny’s E-Bikes. Len encouraged Ravi to seize the moment and embark on this adventure, and provided full support and motivation throughout the 34-day ride.
“Ravi has been an inspiration to myself, the store and community since the day I met him, and I had every confidence in the world that if anyone could accomplish this record, it would be him,” said Lenny Mattioli. “I was so thrilled to be at the finish line to cheer on my friend, Ravi, and celebrate his journey with him in San Diego.”
Understanding the grueling nature of the ride and different types of terrain, Ravi knew he needed to have the best equipment available to ensure his chances of success. Ravi partnered with Stromer and rode a Stromer ST2-S for the entire journey. Unlike road bikes, his Stromer had GPS built in to the bike’s display that also was able to track the bike if it were stolen, a safety feature basic bikes do not offer.
Along his ride, Ravi stopped in the following locations:
||“When we heard Ravi was going to attempt the world record, we did everything we could to warrant a successful ride to aid in electric bike awareness in the United States,” said Scott Anderson, myStromer USA Corp. U.S. marketing manager. “We’re so excited to celebrate Ravi’s achievement and thrilled that the Stromer ST2-S was his trusted companion on this expedition.”
